报告题目(二)Improving the Fracture Toughness of ZrB2-Based Ceramics

报告时间:2016612(星期一)下午200-3:30

报告地点:哈工大科学园C3栋特陶所4楼学术报告厅(417房间)

报告(一)摘要:

This presentation will provide advice on publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals for graduate students and early career researchers.  Researchers strive to publish scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals to disseminate new knowledge and enhance their professional reputation.  Despite the importance of publishing papers, most authors learn the publication process through trial-and-error rather than a systematic approach.  Practical aspects of planning, writing, submitting, and revising manuscripts will be discussed.

报告(二)摘要:

This presentation will focus on improving the fracture toughness of zirconium diboride-based ultra-high temperature ceramics at elevated temperatures using both experimental and computational approaches.  Two different processing strategies were used to produce ZrB2-based ceramics for testing at elevated temperatures.  In the first method, laminates were prepared by alternating layers of hard, strong ZrB2 with relatively weak graphite-ZrB2 mixtures.  A second approach was to prepare a dual composite architecture in which strong composite granules that were rich in ZrB2 were contained in a matrix rich in MoSi2.  To complement the experimental studies, computational methods utilizing finite element and phase field methods were used to predict crack propagation through composite structures.  Both methods provided insight into the criteria needed to promote crack deflection.  The presentation will discuss recent outcomes and insight gained from the studies.
